While I collect all types of mid century ceramics and fabrics, the Barsony black ladies are my favourites. While many consider them kitsch, I have always thought they were beautiful and sculptural. And the fact they are an Australian icon adds to their allure.
The one in the centre had lived on the kitchen counter of my mother's best friend for as long as I can remember. I asked if I could have it for my 21st birthday .The one on the left is the only damaged piece - it cost 10 cents from an op shop circa 1979.
There is little information on the Barsony Ceramics factory which operated in Guildford, Sydney from circa 1950 to the 1970's. G J Barsony was a sculptor who immigrated from Hungary in 1949, and established the company with his wife. He describes himself as an Art pottery manufacturer.
